2011 Season, Here we come! Svetec Farms News and Views - Volume One - January2010

 

Hello dear friends -

Here is our first formal newsletter, a far cry from my meanderings last year which you so kindly endured. 

2011 brings with it much change and much hope for a fabulous farm season. 

Paul is busy educating himself about high tunnels, low tunnels and greenhouses in order to extend our growing season and reduce waste in our organic production.

This weekend, we are gearing up to wind down this year’s season by celebrating our customers, friends and family with a Customer Appreciation event.  On Saturday the 9^th and Monday  the 11^th from 10-4pm, the farm will be hosting a jumping castle, with free face painting, wagon rides, marshmallow roast and tours of the farm all part of the fun!

This weekend, around 25 of 30 staff booked off work in the fields to pursue some sweet August summer - swimming, campfires, and fun.  Even as I managed their absence, I was reminded of my own fresh-aired memories of Camp Maple in Muskoka, leadership games, icy cold water dunks and secret crushes on lifeguards. I hope they come back with plenty of stories and plenty of enthusiasm to start our first organic corn season.

    Last January, when Paul and I decided to try organic farming, one of our concerns was how to get the produce into the hands of our customers. After all, 20 acres of produce was literally hundreds of tonnes of produce.  At the time, we certainly didn't have thousands of customers last January (more like a few hundred).
